Somerset House is a newly built 11-unit self-contained bedsit accommodation with high support services for females with enduring mental health and challenging behaviours and some who may have secondary diagnosis relating to substance misuse who has stepped down from residential care to high support.

Accommodation Service Delivery

All residents are allocated their own key worker who will support their residents to build the right level of confidence and life skills in order to move onto independent living. Our 3 Step Support Pathway will ensure that support is structured and manageable to ensure stability.

  • Health & well-being: Assisting residents to start taking control over and to manage their physical or mental health by providing emotional support, help through tailored support plans, supervision of medication and encouragement to engage with appropriate external agencies. Encourage to live a healthy and fit life through healthy eating and exercise.
  • Engaging with services: Help with keeping appointments and accessing external agencies such as local mental health services, primary health care services (General Practice), counselling, statutory services, social services, voluntary agencies, disability services or drug and alcohol teams.
  • Managing tenancy: Supporting residents to accomplish the varied skills required to step down to a less supported environment such as personal hygiene, nutrition, budgeting, maintaining healthy living conditions, health and safety issues, any antisocial behaviour, complying with terms of the tenancy agreement and good neighbourhood relations.
  • Resettlement support: Through collaborating with external agencies we are able to signpost residents and provide advice regarding private rent, housing associations and housing options in order to move on to independent accommodation.
  • Maximising income: Advice to manage and understand welfare benefit, grants, Housing Benefit and other government benefits entitlements. Support with budgeting, debt management and paying bills or weekly service charge.
  • Social networks & relationships: Cultivate the development of social skills and relationship building capacity with friends, family, professionals and the local community. Support tenants to resolve issues surrounding relationship breakdown with family or others.
  • Living & life skills: Facilitating support and training to develop all appropriate practical and emotional life skills in order to confidently live independently such as cooking, shopping, problem-solving, managing risk, stress management, literacy, completing forms and IT skills.
  • Education, training & employment: Promoting commitment to lifelong learning by supporting residents to get involved in education, in-house training courses and other training opportunities that could lead on to employment, work placements or voluntary work.
  • Meaningful use of time: Encouragement to engage in meaningful activities and commit to personal development and pursue personal passions or hobbies and interests.

Accommodation Eligibility Criteria

The project aims to ensure that all applicants are treated fairly and equally. We provide accommodation and support to those in need of supported accommodation. Due to a limited number of units we use an Admission Eligibility tool to underpin a fair system of allocating places based on priority support needs. This service is for:

  • Individuals with a connection to Lewisham Borough.
  • Single females who are 18 to 65 years of age.
  • Adults who are vulnerable and with a primary diagnosis of mental health (some may have secondary diagnosis relating to substance misuse).
  • People with a demonstrable need for high support need who pose a medium-to-high level of risk.
  • Applicants whose referrals are from Placement Coordinators, Enhanced Recovery Team (ERT) or from Forensic Team.
  • Adults who have the potential to live independently but at the time of entering the service have a need to develop living skills with the aim to step down to medium support.
  • Individuals who are willing to adhere to occupancy terms of the accommodation and to cooperate with the provider to step down to a less supported environment.
  • Individuals who are entitled to claiming Housing Benefit, welfare benefits and PIP with evidence of current entitlement letters from benefit agencies and the means to pay occupancy service charges.

Accommodation Profile

Somerset House is split over two floors and consists of 9 self-contained units with en-suite bedsits. The units come as fully furnished and residents will hold their own key which allows them to have outside visitors whilst in compliance with house rules. This helps to create a home-from-home environment and contributes towards the feeling of beginning to live independently. Residents can smoke and drink alcohol in their own private rooms, however, it is prohibited in communal areas.

We promote a peaceful co-habiting living environment and encourage the development of social skills. As well as support, a concierge service for general assistance, signposting to local services and access to counselling and personal development is also made available for residents ease.

  • Staffing: The project employs qualified day and live-in support workers and an accommodation manager, which residents can communicate with 24/7 throughout the year.
  • Personal care: The services facilitate (but does not undertake) personal care provided through external domiciliary agencies or home treatments teams who can undertake varying levels of personal care such as medication, depot injections or professional psychiatric counselling.
  • Equality: The service gives a full account to the resident’s cultural and racial backgrounds and respects their privacy, dignity and special cultural needs.
  • Local services: The project enjoys a close working relationship with local services such as mental health teams, treatment teams, emergency services, hospital and other services who are involved with their care and support provisions.
  • Facilities: Communal lounge, laundry facilities, public parking at the rear of the building, small communal courtyard and a communal computer with full internet access is available in the lounge.
  • Activities: Further cultivating the development of social and interpersonal skills by encouraging residents to attend activities such as BBQs, resident meetings, volunteering with local charities, quiz and movie nights.
  • Safety & Security: Regular health & safety checks take place throughout the building for the support of resident’s health and safety, who also benefit from the security of CCTV. Full maintenance services provide weekly to deal with reported repairs and renewals and general maintenance of the building.
