Art is joyful, festive, and energising. Through it we see ourselves, our communities and the world differently. Art can also be a tool to ease our burdens and personal difficulties. During the past year, Apax has developed activities to appreciate each resident’s individual talents and potential and has begun the Art for Change program to celebrate these talents.
A philosopher once said that,
“The sciences and arts, all inventions, crafts, trades and their products have come forth from the intellect of man. It is evident that within the human organism the intellect occupies the supreme station.”
We celebrate our residents’ intellect and creativity through activities such as art, creative writing and photography, which does much to support physical, mental and emotional well-being. Being involved in these activities has helped our residents to resolve problems, develop communication skills, reduce stress and increase self-esteem.
One resident, Alex, comments that,
“Art has been helping me to express my thoughts since I was a child, and I would like to thank Apax for the support and encouragement to keep doing it.”
Edmund shared that
“I have been taking pictures my whole life, and I never shared with anybody else. Now, Apax staff have encouraged me to expose my pictures, and I am feeling really motivated to keep taking pictures and sharing them with others.”
Manager Aaron notes that
“Our creative ways to support our residents come from them. They requested to be involved in art activities and we set it up. The results are fantastic. They look motivated, joyful and happy to see their art displayed.”
The walls of Summer House are now full of creativity, enthusiasm and hope, showcasing the talents and creativity of each residents through the Art for Change program.
