A group of our residents from Summer House have started volunteering every Wednesday as Thames21 Riverkeepers, to help improve our local rivers. The project engages with volunteers from the local community, provides training and facilitates fun, and team-based activities that contribute to the improvement of our local environment.
Apax support worker Rikki Braken comments,
“We all meet up beforehand as a team, go to the river and start helping out. It’s great fun – we volunteer for a couple of hours, meet a lot of new people, socialise over some refreshments and then head back home for a rest!”
Our residents are equally enthusiastic. Lisa, one of Summer House residents, says,
“I feel grounded whenever I’m near the water. Helping with the river project is amazing – a real laugh!”
Volunteering at the project has also led to further training opportunities. As a result of the project, another residents, Chrissie, has being interviewing for volunteering roles at local charities and since has also booked a four week course at Bromley College. Speaking about her experience of the volunteering, Chrissie says,
“It’s great, I can’t wait to go back next week.”
